The story behind the Malaysia Award Winning Specialty Liberica Coffee
Liberica coffee, native to West Africa, was introduced to Malaysia in the 1870s during a devastating coffee rust epidemic. Though more resistant than Arabica, Liberica’s low yield and labor demands caused many to abandon it.
Once a dominant crop, it nearly disappeared—until a farmer in Johor stepped in.
Jason Liew, as a founder of My Liberica, was born in a farming family that previously cultivated vegetables. While studying agriculture in Taiwan university, he gradually became captivated by vibrant coffee culture.
Inspired by this experience, he envisioned specialty Liberica coffee not only as a tribute to Malaysia’s traditional kopi heritage, but as the future of Malaysian specialty coffee.

🌱 From Local Roots to Specialty Heights
With determined resolve, he transformed part of his 20 acres family estate into a My Liberica plantation in 2011 and launched Malaysia Local Specialty Coffee Brand – MY LIBERICA in the same year.
In 2014, he launched Malaysia’s first Liberica-specific processing mill—bringing advanced methods like with Natural Sun Dry, Honey process, washed process.

☕ International Recognition and Awards
MY LIBERICA’s beans achieved first global recognition when used by Hugh Kelly (Head Barista of Ona Coffee / Australian Barista Champion🏆) to place third at the 2021 World Barista Championship. This milestone validated Liberica’s potential on the world stage and helped ignite international interest.

My Liberica carries Malaysia’s coffee heritage forward.
Despite its challenges—higher production cost, equipment inefficiencies—MY LIBERICA pushes forward. Its coffee farm is a model of sustainable practice, converting coffee waste into fertilizer and purchasing local Liberica coffee cherries to support Johor farmers.
Its ambition is clear: to preserve Liberica’s heritage and establish it firmly within the specialty coffee community.
What began as a family dream has grown into a mission: to give Liberica its rightful place in specialty coffee.
